Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations on another excellent year at A&M-Commerce! I truly appreciate all you do for our university, particularly for our students.

With the somewhat slower summer upon us, I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know about a couple new internal funding opportunities related to undergraduate research, as well as a few quick reminders about processes related to research and travel.

Funding Opportunities

Through external studies and our own experiences, we know that one strong retention tool for our undergraduate students is involving them in research activity. We are implementing a couple pilot programs to see if they help to increase student retention and satisfaction. If they do show success, we will look for ways to scale these programs up so they can reach even more students.

1) Presidential Undergraduate Research Support: This program will provide an awarded faculty member with a package of $4,500 that requires the faculty member to hire an undergraduate student during the Fall '22 semester to perform up to 19 hours/week (the limit for student workers) of work on their research. The faculty member must pay the student a competitive wage of at least $12.00/hour. The remainder of the funds can be used to purchase supplies, equipment, or travel related to the project. To be considered, please fill out the attached application and submit it to Cece Gassner at cece.gassner at tamuc.edu<mailto:cece.gassner at tamuc.edu> by September 1, 2022. Applicants will start to be notified after July 1, 2022 of whether their request is funded.
2) Matching Funds Program: The Office of Sponsored Programs will pay for an undergraduate to work on a research project subject to all of the following eligibility requirements: 1) you have submitted or do submit a proposal for external funding between May 1 and December 31, 2022; 2) that proposal is awarded external funding; and 3) in the budget for that proposal, funding for at least one undergraduate researcher was included. The funds from the Office of Sponsored Programs will go only toward the compensation for one additional undergraduate researcher on the project, and not toward any other aspect of the project. To be clear, no matter how many undergraduate researchers are included in the budget for the sought-after external funding, only one undergraduate researcher will be funded by the OSP.

Quick Reminders

  * Any requests for external funding for grants or contracts must go through the Office of Sponsored Programs and be approved by the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (the procedure is being updated to reflect the correct title).

  * For any travel outside of the U.S. for university business, you must submit a Foreign Travel request through Concur (found in the SSO portal). Here is the link to university's Foreign Travel page<https://inside.tamuc.edu/facultystaffservices/travelOffice/foreignTravel.aspx> and another link to the updated checklist<https://inside.tamuc.edu/facultystaffservices/travelOffice/documents/Foreign_Travel_Form_Checklist.pdf>. Additionally, whether you are travelling out of the U.S. for personal or university-related matters, you cannot take any university-owned device with you (phone, tablet or laptop), unless you first contact CITE at helpdesk at tamuc.edu<mailto:helpdesk at tamuc.edu>. If it is determined that you took a university-owned device out of the country without permission, future requests for foreign travel may be denied.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the internal funding opportunities or the reminders, above.

Cece Gassner, J.D.
