RE: Five-Week Intervention

Early intervention reporting for freshmen begins today. Reporting takes
place within your MyLeo account. Attached, find a guide to the process
if you have questions. Please complete your reporting by next Thursday,
October 1.

This year's reporting format has been greatly condensed. The
information requested should be readily at hand, and the method for
reporting fairly straightforward.

Early identification of struggling students is one of the most
successful tools to increasing retention rates. The Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board monitors our retention rate among our
freshmen as a measure of our performance. Last year's highly successful
Money4Me campaign was the product of state funds earned by our retention
and graduation record. Participation in this process is not only good
for students, but also good for the University. Past early intervention
efforts have improved retention rates. We hope this year will be no
different.

Please report absences and current grades for freshmen students. Also,
please provide comments you think helpful to understanding a student's
status in your course.

All students receiving a D or F in any course will be identified as at
risk. For those students belonging to University College, Success
Coaches will prescribe a set of expectations to help them get back on
track. Success Coaches will then monitor students' steps toward
improvement.

The first step for any student in academic difficulty will be to see
their professors. Faculty members are central to the success of this
process. First, by reporting fully and quickly, they enable a fast and
vigorous response. Second, by being available to students seeking help,
they not only can help turn students around, but also establish
relationships that enrich students' lives and strengthen the University.

Should you encounter any technical problems with Early Intervention
reporting, please contact Wendy Gruver at Wendy_Gruver at tamu-commerce.edu
<mailto:Wendy_Gruver at tamu-commerce.edu> or by phone at 903-886-5174.

Thanks for all that you do for students and for the University!
