We are pleased to announce the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has
approved our request for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science
degrees with a major in Liberal Studies. This degree program is approved to
begin fall 2007. We thought the following description might be helpful to
the university community in recruiting students to this program.

BACKGROUND AND PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Liberal Studies program is a completion baccalaureate degree for
students that have sufficient hours in two or more disciplines. This program
allows students to integrate two or more academic fields through a core set
of four courses that emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to critical
inquiry. The degree addresses a nontraditional student demographic. This
demographic may be older, racially, and ethnically more diverse, commuter
rather than residential, part-time rather than full-time, and much more
likely to be the first in their families to attend college. Therefore, this
degree program includes flexibility as well as coherence, and students will
be able to select courses taught through non-traditional means (distance
education and online courses) as well as through the traditional classroom
method. This program would seek to accomplish the following objectives:

1. To educate the whole person for lifelong intellectual pursuit and
responsible citizenship on local, state, national, and international levels
of a multicultural society;

2. To develop students' imaginative understanding of other cultures,
societies, and languages;

3. To help students not only to understand increasing globalization but
also to contribute and compete in a global world;

4. To increase students' knowledge and appreciation of the
relationships among various disciplines;

5. To prepare students to use creative and innovative thinking in
society, business, and personal life;

6. To develop students' skills in communication, critical thinking, and
problem solving; and

To give both traditional and non-traditional students a broad-based
education that will help them adapt to changes in society and the workplace.

The implementation date is fall 2007. For more information contact Dr. Derek
Royal, Liberal Studies Director, 903-886-5621.
