Friday, Gov. Abbott announced the 3rd Special Session of the 88th Legislature to begin yesterday, October 9th. Topics on the called agenda include education savings accounts for all Texas schoolchildren, illegal immigration penalties and border security and prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine mandates by private employers.

Several bills in each chamber have already been filed and the first public hearings get underway today. It remains to be seen how well the two chambers will work together especially considering the bad blood between the Speaker and the Lieutenant Governor which has only deepened after the Attorney General's impeachment proceedings.

Thus far we are only following four bills for this session:

HB 48: Relating to a single common course numbering system for and the transfer of course credit among public institutions of higher education in this state.
HB 100: Relating to the creation of a universal higher education savings trust account by the Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board.

SB 7: Relating to prohibiting an employer from adopting or enforcing certain COVID-19 vaccine mandates; authorizing an administrative penalty.

SB 32: Relating to the display of the national motto and historically significant documents to the founding of the United States in public schools and institutions of higher education.

Meanwhile, over in the Drama Club, I mean, Washington D.C., the ousting of the House Speaker (a historical first) has caused any progress to come to a halt as a new Speaker is determined.
