The information being provided in this email has been available on the
main page of the Financial Aid & Scholarships web site for some time now
- the tab reads NEW FOR 2011-2012.

One of the changes for the 2011-2012 involves financial aid and students
repeating courses.

Courses completed with a passing grade and repeated only for purposes of
improving the GPA in the course or to meet the minimum number of hours
to qualify for financial aid will not be paid by financial aid.

Financial aid will be permitted only in such cases when the grade earned
the first time the course was taken is not acceptable for the degree
program the student is pursuing at A&M-Commerce.

Example 1:

Student takes a course that is part of the major and must
complete the course with no less than a B in order to be accepted
towards the degree.

The student completes the course with a C. Even though a C
is a passing grade overall, it needs to be taken again in order to be
accepted towards the degree.

In this situation financial aid can be used to pay for that course that
is being repeated.

Example 2:

Student has only 3 hours remaining to complete their degree.

Student has taken a course previously that is part of their degree plan.
The student earns a B or higher in the course.

The student wants to retake the course only because by
retaking the course they are meeting the minimum number of hours for
financial aid eligibility.

In this situation financial aid cannot be used to pay for the course
previously taken and being taken again to bring total number of hours to
the minimum 6 hour requirement for financial aid eligibility.

Example 3:

Student takes a course that is not part of their degree plan
and just takes the course to have the minimum 6 hour requirement for
financial aid.

In this situation financial aid cannot be used to pay for
the course. The course must be part of the degree plan the student is
pursuing.

Example 4:

Student takes a course that is part of their degree plan but
not necessarily a part of the major.

The student earns a C in the course and wants to retake the course to
improve the GPA.

In this situation financial aid cannot be used to pay for the course.
The student earned a passing grade and cannot use financial aid when
retaking the course.

"Most business men generally are so busy coping with immediate and
piecemeal matters that there is a lamentable tendency to let the "long
run" or future take care of itself. We often are so busy "putting out
fires," so to speak, that we find it difficult to do the planning that
would prevent those fires from occurring in the first place. As a
prominent educator has expressed it, Americans generally "spend so much
time on things that are urgent that we have none left to spend on those
that are important."
