This message is specific to Graduate students who already are awarded
financial aid for the 2011-2012 year.

Rumor / the grapevine has it someone has told students or is telling
students that they should not accept their current awards because since
their award will be changed to reflect enrollment on census date, the
award on record now may not be final.

Our Call Center staff has been providing accurate information indicating
to students they should accept the awards they have right now, even if
the award will be increased to reflect final census date enrollment.
What we are getting from students is that "someone from the back office"
or "someone" or "they" have told me or their friends have told them that
'someone' told them not to accept their current awards. It's the
infamous 'they' or 'someone' or 'someone in the back office' said
person(s). And the students are hesitating on accepting the financial
aid they currently have.

If you hear anything similar to this situation, please note that you
need to accept the aid currently offered and if you have not done so
already do what other requirements related to the loan program you may
not already done. That way we can release money starting this Friday,
August the19th. Graduate students who are currently in more than 6 hours
and remain in more than 6 hours as of census date will have their
financial aid increased after census date. The problem is that if you
don't accept the awards on record, no money will release. If you remain
in 9 hours or more as of census day your award has nowhere else to go
but up. If you drop below 6 hours between now and census day, or are
reported as not attending between 1st class and 12th class day, a notice
will be sent to you from our office alerting you that within 48-72 hours
of when the notice is sent out your awards for the semester will be
cancelled. You must be enrolled in no less than 6 credit hours through
census day to receive financial aid. This is not new and nothing is
different in this situation.

The concern is that students think they will not have sufficient funds
to pay their tuition and fees. This is not an accurate assessment as
this actual example of a real student's case demonstrates.

* $ 3,793.16 12 hours of tuition and fees bill for the fall 2011

* $ 5,598.00 Financial aid scheduled for the 19th for the fall
2011 semester based on 6 credit hours.;$4,051.00 subsidized loan for the
fall $1,547.00 unsubsidized loan

* $ 1,804.84 Left over financial aid which will be issued as a
refund

This student as most graduate level students have sufficient funds to
have their tuition and fees covered with the financial aid determined at
the 6 credit hour level. There is left over financial aid which can be
used to purchase books and supplies, and get them started until census
day; September 14th.

Financial aid students who are being charged out of state tuition should
contact our office now so that we can reflect their higher than normal
tuition costs.

Where is the message coming from we don't know but I wanted to address
it just in case. You the student must accept the award on record and not
wait for it to go up. Otherwise what is there will not release out.
Adjustments will be done.

If there are any questions, we will be happy to answer any questions you
may have. We continue processing financial aid files and awarding
A&M-Commerce students.

"Most business men generally are so busy coping with immediate and
piecemeal matters that there is a lamentable tendency to let the "long
run" or future take care of itself. We often are so busy "putting out
fires," so to speak, that we find it difficult to do the planning that
would prevent those fires from occurring in the first place. As a
prominent educator has expressed it, Americans generally "spend so much
time on things that are urgent that we have none left to spend on those
that are important."
