The ISSO realizes that our current international students often assist
new international students in preparing for orientation and adjusting to
studying here at Texas A&M University- Commerce. We wanted to make you
aware of changes to the international student orientation starting in
Fall 2009 so that you may better assist any new international students
you are in contact with.
Early Check-in
This past spring at the international student orientation we allowed
international students to check-in early with the international office
with the copies of their immigration documents, proof of insurance, and
other required information. Traditionally this has occurred during the
afternoon of orientation, but for future orientations students will be
strongly encouraged to attend early check-in. The reason for this is so
students can avoid the long wait at check-in during the afternoon of
orientation, this will also limit any delays in their ability to
register for courses after orientation, and the ISSO can free up more
time in orientation to address other concerns. Early check-in will
occur on specific days and times, and this information will be posted on
the website and new students will receive this information with their
I-20 and via email.
The insurance hold for registration will remain on all new student's
accounts until they have completed early document check-in and attended
all the morning sessions of orientation. For those students who check-in
their documents prior to orientation day, their holds will be released
by 1:00 on orientation day. All other new students will not have their
hold released until after orientation and they have completed the
afternoon document check-in.
Registering for Orientation
We have developed a registration form on the website at
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/forms.asp
<http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/international/forms.asp> for
international students to register for the international orientation.
This is so we can confirm a student's attendance and once they register
they will be added to an email database to receive important
information.
Please encourage any new international student that you are in contact
with to attend early check-in and register for orientation.
Last of all, while we are very thankful to our current students who
assist our new students when they arrive to A&M- Commerce I will caution
all current students to be sure of the information you are providing new
students. The scholarship office may be changing some of the guidelines
and application processes for scholarships, and as many of you are aware
there have been changes to CPT and OPT with the application process and
regulations. Please be sure of your information or have student contact
the appropriate department for more information. This is to ensure that
new students do not miss out on opportunities or violate their visa
status.
