Okay, here are my comments/suggestions:
In general, I have been very pleased with the formation of CoSEA. We seem to work together better and may have more efficiency with committee work than with the previous College of Arts and Sciences. There also seems to be some degree of consistency in leadership at the Dean’s level, which is a big change. Unfortunately, since there are fewer of us, especially tenured faculty, it seems the committee responsibilities and paper pushing has increased drastically. The need for more faculty indicated in the strategic plan is obvious and should be regarded as the most important issue facing our college.
In the spirit of editorializing, here are my additional comments.
Globalization: Latin America (especially Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Mexico) should be included in the targeted areas. This is going to be a very important area for Agriculture and possible Biological/Environmental Sciences in the future, if not already.
Professional Development: There is no reference to support for conference participation/presentation for full-time faculty or professional development associated with external funding.
STEM vs. STEAM: Some references are to STEAM while others are for STEM. Should we not be consistent in references? Typically, the goals that are good for STEM will also be relevant to the A in STEAM.
While I do not agree with many things this university decides to do, I am glad to be a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Sciences within the College of Science, Engineering, and Agriculture.

Subject: [COSEAfaculty] CoSEA report card - Round 2
Good morning:
My first request (June 6th) for comments on the just completed CoSEA Strategic Plan generated a whopping ONE response, so I am going to try again. This is not just an academic exercise. Like our Program Reviews, SACS requires that we regularly assess the mission and goals of the college. Please, please take a few moments to share your feedback.
This summer marks a major milestone for CoSEA as we complete our second year in space-time.
As part of that process we will be working this summer on grading how we have done on achieving the goals set forth in our Strategic Plan 2011-2013: http://web.tamuc.edu/academics/colleges/scienceEngineeringAgriculture/documents/CoSEAStrategicPlan2013.pdf
We will also be writing a new strategic plan for the coming two years.
I have two requests for you:
1) Have a look at the 2011-2013 plan. How have we done? How would you grade us on the issues important to your programs? If we did not succeed as well as you think we should have, what are your recommendations for fixing it?
2) What goals should we emphasize in the 2013-2015 Strategic Plan? Do you have specific suggestions for how we should address those goals?
Although this exercise if specific to CoSEA, that doesn’t mean we cannot address larger campuswide goals. Feel free to focus on whatever you think would make a productive impact on the learning environment.
Thanks in advance and I am confident we will have a retrospective and a prospective to share at our August 22nd Welcome Back meeting.
