Good morning:

I am writing to inform you about the results of our first official SACS meeting. Dr. Barry Goldstein is the new SACS liaison for TAMUC. This morning he met with deans, department heads and some faculty. His primary emphasis was Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1 (Faculty Credentialing).

His most stimulating observation was that accreditors are now drilling down to the level of titles and content on individual courses. One of the examples he cited was “Here’s a course called Animal Genetics. Does the faculty member teaching this have a PhD in Genetics? If not, then how is this person qualified to teach this course.” In another example he asked “This person is teaching a course called Business Law but I don’t see any indication that they are a lawyer - How are they qualified to teach this course?”

Picky? Yes. But that is precisely the point and we all need to thank Dr. Goldstein for his attention to detail. This also means we have some additional work to do in fleshing out additional details for our SACS documentation from the college.

We will discuss this more at the August 22nd college meeting.

In the meantime, please examine the courses you teach with the critical eye of a complete stranger. If there is any possibility that your qualifications may not be totally obvious, please put together a specific justification for your department head. In most cases it will be as simple as cutting and pasting a few lines from your vitae.
