Women's Issues Working Meeting: Wednesday, April 5
3:00-5:00 RSC Pride
At the February 16 meeting, a number of specific areas were discussed as problems. In addition, people involved in ongoing work on these issues reported on what was in progress.
Mentoring of students, junior faculty, and staff emerged as one of the most important issues. Some academic programs have established programs for students which can serve as models for others, but the possibility and important of cross-discipline mentoring was also discussed as well as the lack of mentoring and advocacy for faculty and staff.
Discrimination in employment and pay, sexual harassment, and sexual assaults were discussed in the context of ongoing work by the Dean of Students Office, the Title IX officer, and the Diversity committee's work with the Climate Survey data. A number of surveys are being planned to identify specific needs for future work.
Dr. Sharon Kowalsky, Director of the Gender Studies program, announced plans to develop a proposal for a Gender Equity Center (working title) which would provide an infrastructure for future work in this area.
The April meeting will be a working meeting for those who would like to work with a group to develop and implement ideas as well as identifying groups and units already working on issues.
Email Robin.Reid at tamuc.edu / Robinareid at outlook.com if you have questions or to volunteer for working groups if you cannot make the meeting.
