Famous Firsts in February

In 2004, Facebook first launched for Harvard University students. The social networking site would later boast over a billion users and change the way people communicate all over the world. In 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship VII Mercury capsule. In 1790 the United States Supreme Court met for the very first time at the Merchants Exchange Building in New York City. The caseload in 1790 was dull to say the least, as the court didn’t hear its first case until two years later in 1792. New Collection in Production: Mysteries of the Brain

NBC Learn has teamed up with the National Science Foundation for another exciting original collection called Mysteries of the Brain. Our producers have been busy interviewing NSF-funded scientists around the country who are doing astonishing research on the brain. Although there is still very little known about how the brain functions across the animal kingdom, this series will explore fundamental questions about this mysterious organ. The collection launches later in 2015, but for now, you can check out some behind-the-scenes production stills on our Instagram page @nbclearn<http://marketing.nbclearn.com/c.html?ufl=7&rtr=on&s=xahkr7,3gvj,5h,jjvd,4onv,a2hk,a3kf&MLM_MID=161839&MLM_UNIQUEID=72b187308f>.

NBC Learn Higher Ed Subscriber Spotlight: "NBC Learn is a voice outside the classroom"

Meet Jennifer Lang, a humanities and American history professor at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, Louisiana. Lang assigns her students a batch of NBC Learn videos centered on a specific topic for each class. After watching all of the videos, students then write a response detailing what they learned that surprised them the most and which of the videos was the most influential in understanding the material.

“Students tend to see history as something that happened in the past but isn’t around them or impacting them now. I showed my class a clip about cannibalism<http://marketing.nbclearn.com/c.html?ufl=7&rtr=on&s=xahkr7,3gvj,5h,2it6,8xp7,a2hk,a3kf&MLM_MID=161839&MLM_UNIQUEID=72b187308f> [in the Jamestown colony] and it really resonated with the students. It helped them realize that we are still trying to understand events that happened hundreds of years ago and that current event in fact do deal with the past. I think NBC Learn is a great tool to help the students. The videos serve as a voice outside of the classroom that echo a concept or point I am making. It’s another way of delivering the message and it is a great supplement to my lecture.”
