Dear Faculty;
For several departments on campus, elections are being held for Faculty Senate. I wanted to take a minute and offer a challenge to each of you, especially the senior faculty, to join us.
We, as faculty, face numerous challenges as we try to meet the demands of the classroom, the academe, and the community. As we try to affect change, we often feel powerless as our individual voice is drowned out by the mélange of various entities across campus having similar issues, but lacking cohesiveness. Faculty Senate has made many strides over the past several years to become that unified voice, and, with your help, can help move the Senate and our institution forward productively and synergistically.
This year we have constructed and approved changes in the Faculty Handbook, Curriculum Review Process (in which you will see more changes in the coming months), and Substantive Changes. We have been involved in changes to University Studies, the Budget Review and Development Council, SACS and the development of the QEP, and the hiring of the new Provost. We filed a vote of no confidence in the CIO that helped foment constructive changes in IT. University rules and procedures now go through Faculty Senate prior to university approval. We are working on (and expect to finish this year) changes to the Faculty Workload Policy, Student Course Evaluations, and we have a pending recommendation to significantly upgrade the stipends we receive following promotion to Associate and Full Professor. We are also working with the Provost to develop the Faculty Center for Excellence, a long-awaited and needed expansion to our Faculty Development program.
Next year, we have even more work as our core curriculum changes, SACS visits our campus, and we welcome a new Provost, followed shortly by the hiring of new Deans in CBE and CoEHS.
Your Faculty Senate is working hard for you. I hope you'll want to join us. In the departments with expiring terms (Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, BA & MIS, Curriculum and Instruction, Mathematics, Music, Nursing, Physics, and Political Science), please express your interest in serving as Senator. If you have a great Senator, let them know you're interested in what's going on.
Let's get involved!
Sincerely,
Derald Harp
