MEMORANDUM
TO: All Faculty
FROM: Dr. Larry Lemanski
Provost and Vice President
Academic Affairs
RE: Federal Initiatives for 2011 (FY 2012)
DATE: September 9, 2010
As you will see from the attached communication from Chancellor
McKinney, the Texas A&M University System universities are asked to
identify their best research ideas and System Office will assist us in
gaining external funding for these projects, especially in the form of
Federal agency funding and Congressional directed spending items
(appropriations/earmarks).
To assist in identifying our best research ideas, I am asking faculty
members to provide a description of his/her research ideas as outlined
in the Federal Initiative Submission Guidelines which is attached for
your reference. Please note the new format and guidelines for the
initiatives this year.
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is sponsoring a workshop on
Federal Initiatives: The Process, Value, & Results, Wednesday, September
15, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm. Two representatives from our Federal Relations
Group from Washington, DC, along with OSP staff, will present the
workshop. I encourage you to attend the workshop if you are interested
in submitting an initiative. You may register for the workshop at
http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/gradschool/research/registration.asp.
Please submit your ideas to your college dean and send a copy to the
Office of Sponsored Programs (Natalie_Henderson at tamu-commerce.edu) no
later than Monday, October 4, 2010.
A priority that we are focusing on this year is to identify projects
that are interdisciplinary and the research of investigators who possess
demonstrated expertise and the potential to successfully conduct the
proposed research. Also, you should think of initiatives that stand a
good chance of attracting funding from Federal and state agencies, which
have an obvious benefit to our region and State. These research projects
when funded, will have a tremendous impact on faculty and students, and
will also serve to advance the university's presence in the research
arena, thus opening new avenues of funding. As a result, you may want
to review the mission and objectives of some of the Federal agencies and
discuss your ideas with your department head and dean before you proceed
to prepare an initiative.
Once initiatives are received, I will work with the Dr. Headley and the
Office of Research as well as Deans Council to identify projects that
will go forward to the System office. In addition, we will identify
areas of overlap among projects, based on your submissions, and
encourage further collaboration to strengthen specific research
initiatives.
Please free to contact my office or the Office of Sponsored Programs if
there are any questions with the preparation of your initiative.
