Dear Colleagues,

Good practice requires that faculty and staff who maintain, use, or report
student data do so in compliance with the requirements of FERPA
<http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html>  and University
policy.  The essence of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) of 1974, as amended is to protect the students' right to inspect and
review information contained in their student records, to protect disclosure
of student information, and provide a process for students who wish to
withhold directory information.  The U.S. Department of Education, Family
Policy Compliance Office, reviews and investigates complaints of violations
of FERPA.  The penalty for violating the Act can mean a loss of all federal
funding, including grants and financial aid.

The attached pamphlet will provide you with detailed information regarding
your responsibilities under FERPA, and hard copies are available in our
office.   FERPA information can also be found on our web site at
