Garamond;color:black'>Good practice requires that faculty and staff who maintain,
use, or report student data do so in compliance with the requirements of <a
href="http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html">FERPA</a> and University
policy. </span></font><font color=black face=Garamond><span
style='font-family:Garamond;color:black'>The essence of the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended is to protect the
students’ right to inspect and review information contained in their
student records, to protect disclosure of student information, and provide a
process for students who wish to withhold directory information.</span></font><font
face=Garamond><span style='font-family:Garamond'> <font color=black><span
style='color:black'> The U.S. Department of Education, Family Policy
Compliance Office, reviews and investigates complaints of violations of FERPA. The
penalty for violating the Act can mean a loss of all federal funding, including
grants and financial aid.<o:p></o:p></span></font></span></font></p>
