The Pre-conference Workshop Abstract:

In this workshop participants will learn how to use a system for assessing
writing and thinking throughout the curriculum. Appropriate for assessing
individual students' writing and thinking in the classroom, as well as for
assessing programs, tools for faculty, assessment teams and peer review will
be examined and applied. An online version of the assessment, feedback and
instructional tool will be demonstrated.

About Terri Flateby:

In collaboration with Elizabeth Metzger, Ph.D., Dr. Flateby developed the
Cognitive Level and Quality of Writing Assessment (CLAQWA) classroom
assessment instrument. Over a period of approximately ten years, CLAQWA has
evolved into a system to assess writing strengths and weaknesses, as well as
the cognitive levels exhibited in writing, by individual faculty and
assessment teams. Recently, a peer review process and an online assessment
and feedback/tutorial system have been created to enhance students' writing
and thinking.

Dr. Flateby has been an invited workshop presenter for association
conferences such as AAC&U's General Education and Assessment conferences,
SACS/COC Annual Conferences, NAPSA assessment conference, and AAHE
Assessment Conferences. She has been an invited workshop presenter for the
NC State Assessment Symposium and the Rose-Human Institute of Technology's
Best Assessment Practices Conferences. In addition, she has provided
writing assessment consultation for Columbus State University, South Dakota
State University, the Community College of Baltimore County and Clark
Atlanta University.

She is currently the Director of Assessment at the University of South
Florida and is writing Enhancing Writing and Thinking through Assessment for
Stylus Publishing.
