RE: Improvements in Scholarship Awards

President McFarland mentioned at the Faculty/Staff meeting last Thursday
that we had increased scholarship awards affecting incoming freshmen and
transfer students for Fall 2006. We announced this to the Enrollment and
Student Affairs staff on December 19. Here is the announcement:

I am pleased to advise you that we will increase the amounts of scholarship
awards in several areas for the 2006-2007 academic year. Thanks to the
careful analysis provided by Becki Blackwell and Vice President Giddens, we
have determined that, through a combination of new funding and reallocation,
we can increase the following scholarships, effective Fall 2006:

            Freshmen

Blue and Gold from $500 per year
to $1,000 per year

Academic Excellence from $1,000 per year
to $1,500 per year

            Presidential from $1,500 per
year to $2,500 per year

            Transfers

            Transfer from $500 per year
to $1,000 per year

Phi Theta Kappa from $1,500 per year
to $2,000 per year

PTK All-state from $1,500 per year
to $2,000 per year.

These increases will be effective for new students only. There will be a
modest reduction in the numbers offered and awarded in each category to
permit the increases. Vice President Giddens will work with Ms. Blackwell
to set the parameters for each scholarship. Although we may notice a small
downturn in numbers in the first year or so, we expect student retention to
improve in the out years, in part because of the more attractive stipends.

In addition to these improvements, we will look at all institutional
scholarships in early January to ensure that they are at competitive levels
as well. For recruiting purposes, the Admissions and other Enrollment
Management Offices are authorized to begin sharing the new rates of awards
immediately.

Thank you to all who contributed to this important initiative.

Pc: President McFarland

            Vice Presidents

            Deans' Council

            Student Affairs Directors
