The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission has
distributed the new guidelines for accreditation. The Principles of
Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement contains the
accreditation guidelines established by SACS last December. While our next
self-study is 10 years away (we actually will begin the process in six more
years) we need to be aware of the current SACS guidelines, as we are
expected to remain in compliance with the guidelines. I will be ordering
copies of the new Principles booklet for all administrators, department
heads, and directors, and will get these out to you as soon as they arrive.
The new Principles is much abbreviated from the old "must" statements -
there are now 12 'core requirements' and four sections of 'comprehensive
standards." I have attached a section of the new Principles dealing with
faculty credentials, as this may have implications for department heads and
deans as they look at staffing for the fall.
