Subject: [TACRAO] Listserv GPAs and Repeated courses

Good morning, TACRAO!

I am looking for information concerning GPAs and repeats after graduating. I used "undergraduate degree" in my questions, but please insert "associate's degree" where applicable.

  1. How do you handle students' GPAs who retake undergraduate courses after earning a bachelor's degree? Here at BC, the cumulative GPA continues to calculate grades taken after a degree has been earned. This was consistent at all the institutions I have worked at. However, the degree GPA should remain static somewhere on your SIS and should not change.
  2. Does the Undergraduate GPA start over? Or continue? Continue.
  3. If you have a repeat policy (such as "last grade earned", "highest grade", or "average"), does it apply to courses taken during the undergraduate degree when the student retakes the course AFTER earning the UG degree? Yes. Students may be trying to increase their overall GPA to prepare for professional schools, teacher programs, etc., and the transcript should be calculating all grades taken while attending your institution. What I have seen in some SISs is that a repeat actually goes and recalculates previous term total/gpa, as the SIS tries to correctly calculate the repeat in their overall logic. You want to avoid that and ensure you're maintaining the integrity of all the individual term totals.

All responses are welcome and appreciated. Please feel free to email me directly. delaneysk at sfasu.edu<mailto:delaneysk at sfasu.edu>
