Registrar Colleagues,

Our campus has been asked to look into major/degree plan specific GPA
calculations that are separate from the overall cumulative GPA, and how
those may interact with graduation. Toward this end, we wanted to gather
information about how other campuses handle these sorts of ‘special’ GPAs.
Any information you can provide in response to the set of questions below
would be greatly appreciated.

Major Specific GPA:

Ø Does your campus compute a separate GPA specific to courses in the
student’s major?

o If so, is this calculated in your SIS, or is it a manual calculation?

o If so, is this GPA listed anywhere on your official transcripts, and if
so, where?

Degree Plan GPA:

Ø Does your campus compute a separate GPA specific to courses actually
applied toward the student’s degree plan (e.g. major + gen ed/core + any
minors or specializations, minus any courses they took for a prior major or
‘just for fun’) during degree checkout?

o If so, is this calculated in your SIS, or is it a manual calculation?

o If so, is this GPA listed anywhere on your official transcripts, and if
so, where?

Degree Posting:

Ø If your campus computes either of the GPAs listed above, are either/both
included in the information block reflecting students’ completed degrees?

o If so, do they replace the cumulative GPA in that block, or are they
included in addition to it?

Ø Does your campus have a policy that would allow a student who has a
major/degree plan specific GPA in the ‘good standing’ range (e.g. 2.00+) to
graduate while their cumulative GPA indicates a negative standing (e.g. 1.99
or worse)?

Thank you,
