[swkcommunity] Research Class Project

Dear Colleagues - I'm going to be teaching a BSW Research Methods class
in the spring semester (two sections, about 25 students each for 50
total) and was wondering if anyone had a significant research project
for your agency and/or community that the class could undertake as a
part of their learning experience? In the past, I had students conduct
surveys on health care needs in Fannin County as a part of the Texas
Dept. of Health (before the name change!) Healthy People 2010 project.
Another year, we did a community needs assessment for Hunt County
United Way to assist them in prioritizing community problems.

What I learned from these experiences is that it really helps the
students get real-world and service-learning experience. However, the
logistics can get a bit tricky and are very time consuming. If there
are several options, I may give students their choice and/or we may just
pick one for the whole class - we'll see. The major constraint is time
and geographic location, so if projects are outside of Hunt County, it
may not be possible for students to help with.

So, please email or call (903-886-5398) if you have ideas or
suggestions. Thanks for all you do ~
