Happy November, A&M-Commerce!

[Title: Image references of the four marks talked about in the email - Description: The far left image is the University Logo, the only and official logo of the university. The middle image is the Lion Graphic. The far right image is the Spirit Logo which will be retired starting December 1, 2015. The bottom image is the Wordmark which is used in narrow and small spaces.]

The Spirit Logo will join the rest of our heritage marks starting December 1, 2015, and the university will move forward with the official University Logo as our only logo, while the Lion Graphic will serve as a supporting design element.

Below are examples of this:

[Title: Examples set one for Spirit logo retirement email - Description: The upper left image is of a polo where the College of Business uses their co-brand on the front patch with the lion graphic on the sleeve. The upper right images are of two rally towels. One is with the University logo while the other one is one the wordmark where the name of the university is on one line. The bottom image is of a pencil with both the lion graphic and name of the university in one line, or also known as the wordmark.]

Lion Athletics, while a part of the entire university structure, publicly and necessarily functions as its own organization while recruiting and promoting its programs. Lion Athletics will utilize the marks they have established as their primary brand. In many cases they will supplement with the University Logo to act as a brand anchor.

Between July and October, Marketing Communications has had great opportunities to assist in this shift, and these are the five most commonly asked questions:

Q. Who can use the Lion Graphic to visually identify their office?

A. Departments, divisions, programs and student organizations whose core mission is student support and whose primary audience is internal can use the Lion Graphic.
Example: Campus Recreation, student organizations, programming for student success and support, etc.

[Title: Examples for internal lion graphic uses - Description: [Bottom] Campus Recreation placed the Lion Graphic on the side of their department name for their internal brand/identity. [Right] Campus Activities Board incorporated the Lion Graphic into their updated logo identity.]

If the core mission is student support and the primary audience is internal, but a publication or advertisement is being produced for an external audience, the University Logo or name must appear on the front of the publication. If the publication will be mailed, the University Logo must be included in the mail panel.

Q. Why does the visual identity of administrative offices, colleges, departments, division, and university units depend on the use of the University Logo?

A. We depend on its use to identify a relationship to the university, support a strong brand, and provide a united and consistent visual representation of the university in the market. Administrative offices, colleges, departments, divisions and university units may use the Lion Graphic as a supporting design element within a publication, but may not use the Lion Graphic to visually identify the office. The official visual identity will use the University Logo.

[Title: Example of College of Business polo with the Lion Graphic - Description: Example of the College of Business polo with the Lion Graphic on the sleeve. The Lion Graphic can also be placed opposite of the co-brand patch.]

Q. As a student organization, we would like to create a logo with the Lion Graphic and the name of the university. How can I do that?

A. Student organizations are welcome to use the Lion Graphic to create a logo of their own. However, the name of the university, or the university logo, cannot be adapted or modified to create the logo. You are welcomed and encouraged to place the University Logo or name of the university on your publications and/or apparel to show the connection.

[Title: Image of updated Campus Activities Board Logo - Description: Campus Activities Board incorporated the Lion Graphic into their updated logo identity. When they want or need to incorporate the name of the university on shirts, flyers or giveaways, they may type out the name of the university, or use the University Logo or Wordmark.]

Q. Where can I get my t-shirts or polos made?

A. We have great licensed vendors who have experience working with our university brand, logos, and who uphold the quality of the marks throughout the process.

We have a handful of local licensed vendors for your convenience. To download the updated list of licensed vendors, visit: tamuc.edu/LicensedVendors<http://www.tamuc.edu/facultyStaffServices/marketingCommunications/standards/approved-vendors.aspx>.

Our Creative Team can help prepare the files you need for your t-shirts, pens, folders and any other trendy items that pop up.

Q. How do I reference the university?

A. The university should only be referenced as Texas A&M University-Commerce (primarily), or A&M-Commerce. “TAMUC” is not an official reference of the university in any publication or writing, however #TAMUC is an acceptable digital reference for shorthand.

Marketing Communications is in the process of researching and developing a consistent and flexible graphic identity system that not only supports the university's core mission but also acknowledges the contribution of the individual units. Because the Lion Graphic has now been made available for use university-wide, several groups are updating their graphic identity to include the Lion Graphic.

With the work in collaboration with Steel Branding, our agency of record, Marketing Communications and the university community, we will be able to deliver an updated and concise set of graphic standards which will accompany the education sessions to communicate the branding and messaging of our university.

As always, we look forward to your feedback while we work towards these milestones. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with your additional questions or suggestions. All are welcome!

Thank you,
