Hispanic Film Showcase Fall 2012

The Spanish Program and the Office of Hispanic Outreach at Texas A&M University-Commerce present Gender Issues in Latin American Cinema at our Hispanic Film Showcase, second edition.

This fall 2012, the theme for our Film Showcase is Gender Issues in Latin American Cinema. This showcase is dealing with representations of "masculinity" and "femininity" as social constructions in Latin America, and how individuals cope with what culture demands of their gender choices.

Our first film is Contracorriente (Undertow) a 2009 Peruvian film directed by Javier Fuentes-León. Contracorriente has been awarded the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the Sebastian Award at the 2009 San Sebastián International Film Festival, among others awards, including the nomination as Best Latin American Film at the 2011 Goya Awards in Spain. Undertow was also selected as the Peruvian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.

Synopsis:Undertow tells the story of Miguel (Cristian Mercado) a young fisherman of Cabo Blanco, a paradise beach village in northern Peru. He is married to Mariela (Tatiana Astengo), who is pregnant with their first son, but he is doubtful about his gender choice. Miguel's difficult dilemma will be solved when he confronts his surroundings and his own individual "ghosts" and fears. [Spanish with English subtitles. This movie has some adult content.]

Date: September 27th at 6pm. All movies will be played at the Theater 203 in the Hall of Languages.
