H1N1 Flu Update for Students, Faculty and Staff

As of May 5, 2009, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and
the Center for Disease Control released a statement stating the H1N1
virus is believed to be less severe than once suspected and that schools
are no longer being urged to close. Texas A&M University-Commerce still
considers the situation a priority and will continue to monitor the
information made available and will stay in contact with local, state,
and federal officials to maintain the preparedness and protection of our
university community.

While the H1N1 flu is contagious, it is still not known at this time how
easily the virus spreads between people. Health officials believe it
may spread in similar ways to the seasonal flu. Texas A&M
University-Commerce continues to urge faculty, staff, and students to be
aware of the importance of good hygiene practices to prevent further
occurrences of illness. You are advised to follow standard precautions
to reduce the spread of any respiratory illness:

* Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water.
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand
sanitizer.

* Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or a tissue and
properly dispose of used tissues

* Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to
others.

In the event that you or someone in your family should suspect illness
or experience symptoms of illness, you should seek immediate medical
attention at the Student Health Center or visit your primary care
physician. Medical personnel have been briefed through the Texas
Department of State Health Services on testing methods for this illness
and are prepared to treat any cases that may arise.
