H1N1 Flu Update for Students, Faculty and Staff

Texas A&M University-Commerce is working proactively with the city of
Commerce, local health agencies and the governor's office to monitor the
H1N1 flu on behalf of its students, faculty and staff.

As of Thursday, April 30, there are no known reports of H1N1 flu in Hunt
County or in our surrounding area. However, officials on campus are
taking precautions in the event reports begin to occur.

Symptoms of the H1N1 flu are similar to those of regular or seasonal flu
and include:
*        Fever
*        Fatigue
*        Lack of appetite
*        Coughing
* Runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea also
have been reported.

While the H1N1 flu is contagious, it is not known at this time how
easily the virus spreads between people. Health officials believe it
may spread in similar ways to the seasonal flu. You are advised to
follow standard precautions to reduce the spread of any respiratory
illness.
* Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water.
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand
sanitizer.

* Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or a tissue and
properly dispose of used tissues

* Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to
others.

In the event that you or someone in your family should suspect illness
or experience symptoms of illness, you should seek immediate medical
attention at the Student Health Center or visit your primary care
physician. Medical personnel have been briefed through the Texas
Department of State Health Services on testing methods for this illness
and are prepared to treat any cases that may arise.
