Texas A&M-Commerce Kicker Chris Quiroga and Defensive Lineman Andreé Smith
Named Lone Star Conference North Division Special Teams and Defensive Player
of the Week, Respectively
COMMERCE, Texas - A pair of key factors in the Lions' 30-3 win over
Northeastern State on Saturday was the efforts of junior kicker Chris
Quiroga (Simi Valley, Calif./Moorpark JC) and junior defensive lineman
Andreé Smith (Big Sandy, Texas), who on Sunday were selected as Lone Star
Lone Star Conference North Division Special Teams and Defensive Player of
the Week, respectively.
Quiroga, who repeats as Lone Star Conference North Division Special Teams
Player of the Week, made three field goals and three extra points in the
win. A&M-Commerce has won the last five weekly Special Teams Player of the
Week honors from the conference office. For the season, Quiroga has made six
out of seven field goals and 19 out of 20 extra points on the season.
Smith earns his first-ever conference honor and was a part of an
A&M-Commerce defense that held NSU to 119 yards of total offense. The lowest
total allowed by an A&M-Commerce defense since 1996 when West Texas A&M was
held to 114 yards. Smith had six tackles, including 2.5 for minus 24 yards -
a sack for minus 18 yards and a forced fumble. For the season, he has 18
tackles, including seven for loss - three of which are sacks. In addition,
Smith and the Lions defense have held a team less than 100 yards on four
occasions rushing and under 125 yards rushing on six occasions.
The Lions have earned nine Lone Star Conference North Division weekly honors
in 2007 and will look to extend its winning streak to three games on
Saturday when they host Angelo State at 2 pm at Memorial Stadium.
