Subject: Invitation for Your Undergraduates to Apply to the K-State Physics REU Program for 2023
**External Email**
Dear Colleague:
We would like to ask you to encourage undergraduate students at your institution who are completing their degrees in Physics to consider pursuing our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program here at Kansas State University.
Our department will host our program entitled Interactions of Matter, Light and Learning for 10 weeks next summer pending funding. We invite your students who have completed a course in modern physics to apply. To this end, we ask that you forward and consider posting the attached flier for display in your department as you see fit.
Student participants will be involved with a variety of research projects at the leading edge of world-class research. For example, students will study the attosecond physics of electrons in matter; nanoparticle formation; materials and light scattering; biological physics; quantum and coherent control; neutrino oscillations; cosmology, atomic and molecular dynamics, using ultrafast lasers; and how students learn physics. They will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities such as the ultrafast and high intensity lasers in the James R. Macdonald Laboratory.
All students will be full participants in active research groups, and mentored by faculty recognized for their research and teaching abilities.
Students selected to participate will receive a $6,000 stipend, travel expenses up to $1250, and room and board, for a value of over $9,500. They will live on campus with students in this and other REU programs and will have access to all the usual facilities at Kansas State: libraries, recreation center, and so on.
Online applications will be available at www.phys.ksu.edu/reu<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.phys.ksu.edu_reu&d=DwMFAg&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=ClC0dKui16NsesUATLpQgnMUgkdQBfRjO_qQut95l7c&m=JGdnNoluZw7sdheBEb2W3ZM97uxkF6BqAGk3v2zeluYUkhiAXkhlEl53MylXsAYu&s=RsmZlPmyn2uBWReHs7_YjGgCp8HpTW5RrSmqR9PZKGc&e=>. An unofficial transcript and letter of reference are also required. We will begin reviewing applications on February 15 and will continue until all places are filled.
If you or your students have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (785)532-1612 or e-mail reu at phys.ksu.edu<mailto:reu at phys.ksu.edu>.
Sincerely,
Bret N. Flanders Loren Greenman
