<p class="MsoNormal">We would like to ask you to encourage undergraduate students at your institution who are completing their degrees in Physics to consider pursuing our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program here at Kansas State University.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Our department will host our program entitled Interactions of Matter, Light and Learning for 10 weeks next summer pending funding. We invite your students who have completed a course in modern physics to apply. To this end, we ask that
you forward and consider posting the attached flier for display in your department as you see fit.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Student participants will be involved with a variety of research projects at the leading edge of world-class research. For example, students will study the attosecond physics of electrons in matter; nanoparticle formation; materials and
light scattering; biological physics; quantum and coherent control; neutrino oscillations; cosmology, atomic and molecular dynamics, using ultrafast lasers; and how students learn physics. They will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities such as the
ultrafast and high intensity lasers in the James R. Macdonald Laboratory. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">All students will be full participants in active research groups, and mentored by faculty recognized for their research and teaching abilities.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Students selected to participate will receive a $6,000 stipend, travel expenses up to $1250, and room and board, for a value of over $9,500. They will live on campus with students in this and other REU programs and will have access to
all the usual facilities at Kansas State: libraries, recreation center, and so on.<o:p></o:p></p>
