Subject: DOE Genesis Mission (DE-FOA-0003612) – Limited Submission Opportunity (April–May Deadlines)

Good Morning Dear All,

The U.S. Department of Energy has released the Genesis Mission (DE-FOA-0003612), a major initiative to accelerate scientific discovery and energy innovation using advanced AI. This is a large, multi-office funding opportunity (~$294M total) supporting interdisciplinary, multi-institutional efforts that combine domain science, AI/ML, and real-world data or operational systems to address DOE mission challenges.

  * The 2026 cycle includes two phases. Phase I proposals are due April 28, 2026, with awards of approximately $500K–$750K for ~9 months. Phase II requires a LOI, the LOI is strongly encouraged. Full Phase II application instructions will be provided through a forthcoming amendment to the guidelines. While teams may apply directly to Phase II if they have already achieved Phase I-level maturity, DOE anticipates that most FY26 awards will be Phase I.
  * This is a limited submission opportunity with restrictions on the number of applications per institution and focus area. Applicants should refer to the solicitation guidelines for full details, including Phase I and Phase II submission options.
  * DOE is seeking proposals that demonstrate how AI can meaningfully accelerate R&D workflows, supported by real data and a validated proof-of-concept in Phase I, with a clear path to scaling in Phase II. Projects must be multi-institutional and integrate domain expertise, AI/ML capabilities, and data or experimental infrastructure.
  * Given the limited submission constraint and timeline, campuses are encouraged to focus on strategic topic selection and identification of the strongest experts and collaborators to advance the most competitive proposal in each focus area.
     * Please share this opportunity broadly within your units.
     * A checklist, outline, and additional reference materials are attached for your reference and use.
     * This is a time-sensitive opportunity requiring rapid prioritization ahead of the April deadlines.

Best wishes
-Sharmila
