Dear Colleague:
We would like to ask you to encourage undergraduate students at your institution who are completing their degrees in Physics to consider pursuing our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program here at Kansas State University.
Our department will host our program entitled Interactions of Matter, Light and Learning for 10 weeks this summer. We invite your students who have completed a course in modern physics to apply. To this end, we ask that you forward the attached flyer and application information to these students, and print the attached poster for display in your department as you see fit.
Student participants will be involved with a variety of research projects at the leading edge of world-class research. For example, students will study the attosecond physics of electrons in matter; nanoparticle formation; quantum and coherent control of laser-cooled atoms; nonlinear fiber optics; neutrino oscillations; atomic and molecular dynamics, using ultrafast lasers; and how students learn physics, using eye-tracking and other diagnostic techniques. They will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities, including the Kansas Light Source ultrafast high intensity laser and a tandem van de Graaff accelerator. All students will be full participants in active research groups, and will be mentored by faculty who are recognized both for their research and their teaching abilities. For example, our atomic physics program is highly rated, and two of our faculty members have been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as National Professor of the Year.
Students selected to participate will receive a $5,200 stipend, partial travel expenses, and room and board, for a value of over $8,500. They will live on campus with students in this and other REU programs and will have access to all the usual facilities at Kansas State: libraries, recreation centers, and so on.
Online applications are available at www.phys.ksu.edu/reu<http://www.phys.ksu.edu/reu>. An unofficial transcript and letter of reference are also required. We will begin reviewing applications on February 18 and will continue until all places are filled.
If you or your students have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at (785)532-1619 or e-mail reu at phys.ksu.edu<mailto:reu at phys.ksu.edu>.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Kristan L. Corwin Bret Flanders
Associate Professor Associate Professor
