Dear colleagues —
I am writing in the hopes that you can alert mathematically inclined students in your program to an opportunity for graduate studies at Brandeis. Brandeis has an NSF IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) grant titled “Geometry and Dynamics”. This is an interdisciplinary grant in the mathematical/theoretical sciences, based on the fact that much of the mathematical/theoretical work at Brandeis uses the same set of techniques and concepts, such as: the theory of stochastic processes, quantum and statistical field theory, geometry and topology, and the theory of complex dynamical systems.
US citizens or permanent residents who are applying for PhD programs in biology, chemistry, computer science, international economics and finance, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, or physics are eligible to apply. The student would be accepted into a specific disciplinary PhD program and would be expected to fulfill the PhD requirements within that program. In addition, the students would participate in a set of research rotations, shared interdisciplinary classes, regular internal and external seminars, and a yearly 2-week summer institute consisting of lectures covering more advanced topics in the mathematical sciences, and internship opportunities at the International Center for the Theoretical Sciences in Bangalore, India. The IGERT will provide a stipend of 30,000 USD per year for two years – these are typically taken within the first 3 years of their PhD training, depending on their specific departmental requirements and research trajectory.
Our main goals are to create a close-knit, interdisciplinary community of graduate students and faculty within Brandeis, and to leave students with both a solid disciplinary education combined with the skills and background to collaborate and communicate across existing intellectual boundaries. Brandeis is an ideal place for interdisciplinary theoretical research and education. We have a highly collegial and intellectually rigorous environment, with a wide spectrum of eminent and creative scientists, and a record of groundbreaking interdisciplinary work.
I have attached a PDF of a flier that can be given to interested students. In addition, a website for the program, with links to more details, can be found at:
http://www.brandeis.edu/igert/index.html
Interested students should apply through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences:
http://www.brandeis.edu/gsas/#gsas
They should indicate interest in the IGERT program in their statement of purpose. They should also email the IGERT program coordinator, Anthony Bottaro (bottaro at brandeis.edu<mailto:bottaro at brandeis.edu>), so that we can keep a list of interested applicants. Finally, students or faculty with further questions can contact me (albion at brandeis.edu<mailto:albion at brandeis.edu>), Tony Bottaro, or any of the IGERT affiliated faculty. Brandeis is located in Waltham, MA just outside of Boston.
Brandeis University is an equal opportunity employer, and strongly encourages female and minority applicants.
Best regards,
Albion Lawrence
Associate Professor of Physics
IGERT principal investigator
