One of the closest Type Ia supernovae in modern times has just been detected in the galaxy Messier 82. Following this supernova as it gets brighter and fades would be a great student project for an undergrad (probably not a good grad project because every astronomer and their mother working on supernovae and cosmology will be following this).
If you are interested, let me know; we should start observing tonight at the Commerce Observatory.
