>From Dr. Bridges to Journalism Students:

Registration for the fall semester at Texas A&M University-Commerce is
underway, per University guidelines, so please note these comments about
classes:

---Core courses all students must complete: JOUR 1307 (formerly 114),
J115, J335, J445 will be offered ONLY in the fall term of 2011. Please
note that J214 has a lab section for which a student must register.

---J115 has filled quickly in the past two or three years, and at this
time in University planning, the Department and the Journalism Division
cannot guarantee a second section will be added, as we have done in past
years. So, register early. Dr. Bridges and Dr. Dempsey will seek a
second section if needed. Please note that the University does not know
now what the final budget will be for the next academic year, and it is
expected that cuts will be made in budgets throughout the University.
But Dr. Jones has said he does not expect cuts in class offerings. That
is the good news for students.

---Courses for news-editorial majors: you should take J214, with J314
to be followed in the spring of 2012. Journalism 316 should be taken in
the fall, as that class will NOT be offered in the spring of 2012 (at
this planning stage). If you have not had J1307 (formerly 114), it can
be taken; it is usually offered each semester.

---Courses for public relations majors: J329 should be taken, even if
you have not had J328, which is on the books during the present
semester. You can add whichever core courses (above) that you need.

---CURRICULA CHANGES: The Department will be implementing some changes
for incoming students this fall, and it is expected that further changes
will be proposed for journalism for the following semesters. So, it is
probably wise for all current students to enroll in the present
curricula of your sequence to complete those requirements for
graduation.

---We may offer in the spring some special topics course or J350 (again)
or a new magazine course, which has been added to the curriculum now
proposed (all current proposals must be approved all the way to
officials in Austin).

I know this may be a lot to read, but please note these advisories and
let Dr. Bridges or Ms. Osgood know how we can help. Please do not sign
up for classes arbitrarily; it can lead to some concerns or removal if
necessary. We have tried to be lenient on prereqs but sometimes we
cannot.
