International students (F-1) will occasionally contact the Office of International Student Scholar Services (ISSS) to discuss how "take a break from their studies and return to their home country" for the fall or spring semester  Students will often call this a "leave of absence" even though there is no such benefit with the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) F visa regulations.

The ISSS has created a handout and notification form called Temporary Absence from Studies that addresses the impact a break in studies for a fall or spring semester will have on a student's F-1 status, different things to consider, and the notification process.
