Good afternoon department heads:
We had a full three hour meeting of the ADC (Academic Deans Council) this morning. As is the case with the legislature being in session, no one is safe in such a situation. J
Most of the meeting dealt with SACS Snapshot Year activities. We will discuss most of this in detail at next week’s CoSEA Leadership Meeting (every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 3:00 PM), but there are a couple of time critical items as noted below.
1) Derald Harp did a great presentation on the new curriculum review process and the associated substantive change policy (see attached). I need to cast our collective votes on the curriculum document by tomorrow afternoon so please take a few moments to look it over and let me know. Note: These have already been approved by Faculty Senate. In addition, there was extensive discussion of a new faculty credentialing process led by Brent Donham et al. The basic idea is to produce a baseline credentialing memo for each and every faculty, adjunct, GTA, etc. and then build an updating mechanism into Banner to ensure we always have proper credentials on file. We were asked what we thought of Digital Measures. I think not much but apparently some other colleges like it. Your thoughts?
2) Roseann Hogan is performing an audit of all of our on-line and partially on-line degree programs. Any time there is a possibility of a student graduating with >25% of their courses received on-line (including core classes), a report to SACS is required.
3) As required by the THECB, department heads will be producing program reviews for each and every program this year. The exceptionally good news is that Roseann et al have been hard at work putting much of the traditional “program review” data on-line. See http://web.tamu-commerce.edu/aboutUs/institutionalEffectiveness/program--program-reviews.aspx The “data viewer” on that site is quite interesting.
4) We discussed bring back the IDEA evaluation instrument. I was instructed to check on the costs.
5) We discussed the recently order program moratorium on new programs. The only exception known at this time is the Texas Physics Consortium project we have already been working on. This will likely be our guinea pig for the new curriculum review process. It will need to be completely through the process before Christmas break.
6) Brent Mangus and I will be surfing for new office space. Sal Attardo volunteered that there may be some open space in the Hall of Foreign Languages.
7) We have been asked for nominations to the Academy of Teachers Educators. I have one candidate identified from CoSEA.
8) There was a generic discussion from Dan Edelman on the topics of reassigned time, GA duties, and faculty workload. He wants to get a working group together to deal with the issues. I pointed out that we have already had discussions with Faculty Senate reps on all of these topics and that we have a July 2012 draft. Let me know if you are interested in working on this project.
9) SPSS software package. We currently pay $10,000 annual for this software. Are any of you using it in CoSEA? Can it be replaced by our existing site license for Mathematica?
10) We need to build a post-tenure review schedule.

Subject: New Curriculum Process Procedure for review and approval - COB 29th feedback needed
As discussed in the meeting today, attached are the two revised curriculum change procedures. The substantive change policy was approved with one change already.
What I ask you all to do is review and let me know of any changes you feel are needed by COB 29th. As the provost indicated, not hearing, we’ll assume you have no feedback for us.
I know we’re asking a lot of you, but we all want what’s best for the university, so thanks for your help and support. Much appreciated.
