Dear CHSSA Students,
CHSSA invites you to help make this year's Civil Discourse Symposium a meaningful learning experience for you and faculty. Taking place on Tuesday, April 7, at the Rayburn Student Center, the symposium is a student-focused event designed to strengthen skills essential across all disciplines: critical thinking, respectful dialogue, active listening, and thoughtful engagement with differing viewpoints. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with public officials, participate in discussions and apply what they learn in real time.
The day will feature many dignitaries, including CHSSA's own Dr. Mark Menaldo, moderating for several Texas state representatives. This is your opportunity to ask your legislators what they are voting for, why and to tell them whether you think they are voting for things that represent your interests.
There will also be nationally recognized speakers, including John Quiñones, an award-winning journalist from ABC News, a media panel with Alexander Heffner, host of PBS's The Open Mind, and Phil Prazan, co-host of NBC's Lone Star Politics.
We encourage you to consider ways this event can connect with your course objectives, including:
* Incorporating the symposium into class discussions, reflections or assignments
* Ask your professors to include this participation as part of coursework tied to communication, civic engagement or leadership
* Ask your professors to offer extra credit for student attendance
By participating and engaging with your professors and fellow students, you are learning and reinforcing the value of civil discourse as a lifelong skill.
Two separate sessions are available - a morning session at 9:30 a.m., and afternoon session at 1:00 pm. Each session has a distinct offering. Select the session(s) that works for you and your schedule. No registration necessary; just bring your Lion Card to get in!
For more details regarding the sessions, you can view full schedule at https://www.etamu.edu/civil-discourse-symposium/.
Thank you for your continued commitment to student learning and engagement.
Dr. Joseph Romero
