[CBW_Exec] FW: Wednesday workshop question

Sorry to speak about you in third person, Steve, but . . . :)

I love the idea of Steve serving as respondent on this panel, especially given that his book will likely be out by CCCC 2012 and the panel speaker lineup is so impressive. I think this would really enrich an already quite rich discussion on "What's New in BW?"

If he's willing . . .

Steve's published widely in our field's top journals, but this is his first book and he's going up for tenure this year so it seems qualifies that "new" category in some fresh ways too. And this: I'm sure he'll sail through that tenure process given his publication, teaching, and service records, but I can't imagine adding "respondent" on Featured Panel like this could hurt his case. :)

As a reminder:
Steve Lamos is Assistant Professor of English and Associate Director of the Program for Writing at the University of Colorado-Boulder. His forthcoming book, Interests and Opportunities: Race, Racism, and University-Level Writing Instruction in the Post-Civil Rights Era (University of Pittsburgh Press 2011), examines historical relationships between race-based educational opportunity programs and basic writing instruction. He has also published related essays in College Composition and Communication, College English, and the Journal of Basic Writing

Hi all:

Many thanks for mentioning me in the context of this CBW panel: I'm very flattered!

I am, however, already working with Kelly and Shannon on a different panel.

I'd certainly be happy to serve as a respondent if the other presenters think it appropriate. But, if not, then I'll just make sure to be an attentive member of the audience...

Steve

Hi Liz:

Actually, I've asked Steve to be on a separate panel (not BW-specific) with me and he's agreed. So, I think you could see if he wants to do a second, but it would have to be "respondent" then for the CBW one.

[I don't mean to speak for him--just weighing in for time's sake if people are planning]

Hi Peter and all!

Peter--I'm so glad that you think this will work for a preconference
workshop! Hannah and I will touch base with you on Monday about
names/etc. for the workshop. We can also work out timings and what will
work best for you all.

Regarding the featured panel, I too, am suffering from too many e-mails!
(What a lovely problem to have, folks, on the CBW site, right?).

Here's where I *think* we're at on the featured session:

You and Lynn volunteered (?) to head this up. I think we should add
Steve Lamos to the panel and call it "What's new in Basic Writing?" or
something like that. Given your national work on ALP, I think it's very
appropriate for your work to be featured.

What do others think?

Thoughts?

Liz,

Sorry to be so slow in responding. My school's email system has been
down for the past day and a half, so now I'm trying to get caught up.

I, too, find all this energized discussion very invigorating, and I
thank you and our EB colleagues for trying to find just the right
balance of offerings. The suggestion of an all-day CBW workshop with
ALP included for a couple of hours would be fine with us. Including
Bruce Horner will be great. And we ALP folks will be happy to make
parts of our presentation more interactive.

Our original idea for a workshop was focused on issues involved in
starting up an ALP program at schools who were considering such a course
of action. That doesn't seem a good fit as part of your workshop, so
what we'll do is an overview of ALP and reports on several studies we
have conducted investigating how well the program works and why.

I haven't seen much discussion--although it may be in some email limbo
where messages go when the server is down--of the featured session
during the conference. At one time my name was mentioned as part of a
panel to include, possibly, David Bartholomae, Lynn Troyka, Bruce
Horner, and Mike Rose. Somehow my name seems a little out of place in
such an illustrious group, and it would perhaps be piggish of me to ask
to be included in the workshop and the featured session.

With that in mind, I suggest we go to work on contacting the others on
the above list and inviting them to present on the featured panel. I
think they'll do fine without me.

Liz, I like this structure very much. We have a broad theory+history
framework from Bruce Horner, then the excellent practices of ALP from
Peter Adams, and then our open-call invitation to new voices in BW. I
think this will be a very stimulating and productive workshop.

The one detail that came up in the EB meeting is that several
individuals thought we had, possibly, too many voices, without enough
time for reflection and discussion, in the open-call conference section,
so we may want to adjust the length of the talks and the q+a in that
last segment. Once we've got that settled, we can go to the whole list.

Happy Monday...

Bill
