[CBW_Exec] Listserv

Susan, and all,

Especially in today's economy many contingent faculty lack the economic resources to travel
to national conferences, but are more able to attend more local/regional conferences. And,
given that they often teach the lion's share of basic writing classes, without much in the way
of professional training, regional conferences could be one way to further professionalize our
basic writing faculty. I know that when I started as a freeway flying teacher of writing courses,
my sole claim to knowledge about writing was the fact that I write myself. I had a BA in English
lit and that was all. I remember how much I was hungry for knowing more about my field and
how I was blown away the first time I got to the Cs and heard Greg Glau talking about the ASU
Stretch Program. It wasn't until after I started work on my PhD in Comp/Rhet--Basic
Writing--only the second person at Michigan State to Specialize in Basic Writing. I know the
hunger to learn more is out there, and that relatively small experiences with the CBW can lead to
life changing decisions. Impacting faculty at a regional level can help those folks who
might not otherwise decide to increase their educational backgrounds. My first C's were in Chicago,
a location well within the region I lived in at the time. I just checked in my vita and noticed that the
first ten or so years I was teaching virtually all my conference attendances were at local or regional
conferences.

Marcia

I think several of us could reply. I think that it's an important topic
& idea. I understand the history of having the workshop, but it is true
that many contingent faculty can't travel to C's. It might be
interesting to find out how much interest there is. I would be willing
to *help* answer questions about facilitating such a conference for
folks in regional areas.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how this would/should connect to
TYCA?

Yes, I've seen the posts on the CBW listserv, and have been considering
a
response. I very much like the idea of regional conferences. So many BW
educators are part-time folks who cannot afford CCCC-- and whose needs
are
not necessarily addressed at regional TYCAs.

I welcome suggestions from exec committee-- and then would take
responsibility to respond to the listserv. My deadline for responses
would
be tomorrow morning, as I'm away from email Friday and Saturday for a
conference in CT. Wonderful to see all of you last week!

Peace and take good care,

Susan
