I LOVE this part! Congratulations, Greg and Hannah!

Over here, the news is good as well. A long story with a very happy ending.

Several of you may have heard my loud and recurring grumbling about a search
we understood we understood we¹d able to do last year . . . until very late
in December 2007, when we finally got word that the position wasn¹t funded
after all (even though everyone up the line had approved it). Sigh.

This year we were terrified the same thing would happen again, so like the
good do bees we are, we put forward the paperwork months and months early
and followed up on it frequently.

The search was very late in getting the official approval (December!), but
even so we we ended up with a fabulous pool of applicants and one hell of a
new Assistant Professor of English (Director of the Writing Center and the
Basic Writing Program). I can¹t wait to introduce you all to her and get her
folded into our community.

This is a huge step for us in moving the Converging Literacies Center
forward. And this term our new, integrated model for writing programs (basic
writing/first-year writing, the writing center, graduate coursework in
writing studies, deep connections with the library, community outreach and
professional development for area high school teachers‹an in service of
developing literacies in the 21st century) was given a shot in the arm by
the incredibly generosity of our incredibly professor Director of Libraries.
Via a digital libraries grant, he¹s funded a pilot program to the tune of
50,000 so we can establish a CLiC you can point to. We¹ve ordered class sets
of flipcameras, laptops (with loads of great editing software), audio
recorders, harddrives, tripods, and other equipment to support multimodal
composition. Tutors from the writing center are available to work with
students as they write with new media and they will continue to offer great
support to writers working with alphabetic texts as well (very important!).
I¹m teaching a graduate class called ³Writing with New Media² (first of its
kind) and we are using this course to stress test the CLiC project before
before moving from this pilot to the real deal. I¹ll teach an undergraduate
section of it next spring. Over the next year we¹ll be integrating new media
into some sections of first-year composition, with a broader new media
assignment to roll out across the program the following year.

You can see why we need a great new writing center director to push this
vision to the next level. I¹ll remain on board, now as Director of
First-Year Writing and continuing on as Director of the Converging
Literacies Center. We hope to renew our search for the Director of
First-Year Writing next year, so I can turn even more of my attention to
keeping these various programs in deep collaboration.

A great year! A huge one for us.

Looking forward to seeing all of you.

Best,
Shannon
