Headley presiding. Present were: Dr. Linda Ball, Dr. Donna Dunbar-Odom, Dr. JoAnn DiGeorgio-Lutz, Dr. John Greenhut, Dr. Kishor Guru-Gharana, Ms. Jamie Snider for Ms. Nance’ Headley, Dr. Jeff Kopachena, Ms. Tamara Lane for Ms. Kim Laird, Dr. Joyce Miller, Dr. Randy Odom, Dr. Tara Tietjen-Smith, and Dr. Bob Williams. Dr. Ben Cranor and Mr. Michael Miller were absent. Dr. Mary Beth Sampson, Vice Chair, was also in attendance.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>Action Items<o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal> The minutes from the last Graduate Council meeting, November 8, 2011, were approved.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><o:p> </o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>Committee Reports<o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal>Committee on Administration<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'>Dr. DiGeorgio-Lutz presented two committee reports. The Council unanimously approved a revision to the Procedure 11.04.99.R0.20 <i>Examinations for Graduate Degrees</i> in regard to retaking the examination if a student has failed the first attempt.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'>The Council also made revisions to Procedure 11.04.99.R0.18 <i>Time Limitations for Graduate Programs</i> to include a time limitation on coursework used toward a graduate certificate.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Committee on Graduate Faculty, Research and Instruction<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'>Dr. Dunbar-Odom presented the committee report on applications for Graduate Faculty membership. The Council unanimously approved the following graduate faculty membership for:<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:1.0in'>Lloyd Basham (Marketing & Management)<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:1.0in'>Robert Rodriguez (Political Science)<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'>Visiting Graduate Scholar membership was approved for:<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'> Dr. John Hamilton (Texas A&M University-Texarkana)<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Committee on Curriculum<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'>Dr. Williams presented a request to make changes to two graduate certificate—<i>Film Studies</i> and <i>Studies in Children’s and Adolescent Literature and Culture</i>. The Council unanimously approved these changes.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'>Three new graduate certificates were presented and unanimously approved by Council<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'> <i>Holocaust Studies<o:p></o:p></i></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'><i> Administering School Programs that Serve Special Populations<o:p></o:p></i></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'><i> Administering University Interscholastic League (UIL) School Programs<o:p></o:p></i></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'>Dr. Williams presented a committee report recommending course and curriculum changes. The Council unanimously approved the recommendations.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Discussion<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in'>The Graduate Council discussed workload equivalencies for advising theses students. There was concern that the university does not have the infrastructure to support the current procedure. The Committee on Administration was charged to continue to review the issue associated with workload equivalencies and to investigate how other institutions handle it. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>Announcements/Updates<o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-line-height-alt:10.0pt'><span style='letter-spacing:-.7pt'> Report on Pathways Symposium <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:40.5pt'>65 students (undergraduate & graduate) and 9 faculty members attended the 9<sup>th</sup> Annual TAMU System Pathways Student Research Symposium at Texas A&M University, College Station on November 11<sup>th</sup>.
