There are two noteworthy
changes this year. First, submit your applications to the Provost's Office
(BA 280), not to the College of Arts and Sciences. Second, because we are
initiating an on-line system that will enable the Faculty Development Committee
members to review and rate your applications from their home or office computer,
your application and any supporting materials will have to be scanned by the
staff in the Provost's Office. For this reason, we urge faculty to
exercise restraint and limit the number of pages that you submit! For
example, do not submit an entire conference program; the page on which your
panel or presentation appears is sufficient. Likewise, 30 or 40-page vitas
are a very bad idea; we encourage short-version vitas of 5 pages or less.
A formal letter of acceptance from your conference or workshop organizer remains
a crucial component of your application.

(It may occur to someone
that scanning their own materials and submitting an electronic application to
the Provost's Office would be helpful; please don't do it, since the hard copy
you submit is our safeguard against computer problems, and some Committee
members may wish to review hard copy instead of using the new
system.)

The Committee will still
meet, in the old-fashioned way, to discuss the applications; applicants will be
notified around November 1 about the outcome. Direct questions or concerns
to me, rather than to the Provost's Office. Thank you for your cooperation
in helping us make the transition to the new system.
