Dear faculty and staff,
As you most likely are aware, higher education in Texas is navigating a period of profound change shaped by legislative action, public scrutiny, demographic and technological shifts, and evolving expectations of what it means to be an institution of higher education. The Texas A&M System is committed to academic review and transparency, and recent policy revisions (System Policies 08.01 and 12.01) reinforce the balance between academic freedom and academic responsibility. As the Chancellor has shared, these policies are not to limit scholarly inquiry, research or the ability to teach complex or controversial topics, but rather ensure alignment of courses and documentation, where we demonstrate clarity of purpose, transparency, and excellence grounded in scholarship. Attached, you will find FAQs about the recent policy changes. As more information becomes available about course reviews, we'll make sure to keep you updated.
Given policy revisions at the System, as well as the ongoing changes at both the state and federal level, we understand that members of our community may experience different levels of reactions in response to these shifts-recognition and acceptance of new realities, questioning and critique as we seek understanding, adaptation as we explore new approaches, and principled objection where core academic values are at stake. Each stage is valid and essential to the change process.
In this complex time, we are called to go beyond imparting knowledge and to teach how to think critically, engage ethically, and lead with integrity. As academic leaders, we deeply value our faculty and their expertise, recognizing they are central to advancing knowledge, inspiring students, and fulfilling our university's strategic plan. We hold true to our fundamental mission and vision of being a student-ready university, teaching at a high level, meeting learners where they are, supporting our colleagues, and fulfilling the promise of education. We honor our institutional and legal responsibilities because we value the public trust placed in higher education. We embrace the duty to question, analyze, and critique, which are fundamental to academic life-our classrooms are where ideas meet examination, where understanding deepens through dialogue, and where students learn to navigate complexity with respect and courage.
Together, we balance conscience with compliance, care with courage, and responsiveness with resilience. In doing so, we model for our students and others what it means to live as educated citizens and to lead with empathy and integrity in a changing world. Through open dialogue, reflection, and collaboration, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence, expanding opportunity for all learners, and preparing students not just for careers but for lives of purpose and engaged citizenship. We maintain rigorous standards that give degrees genuine value while better demonstrating the breadth and impact of the learning we provide. Collectively, we lead by shaping a future anchored in our professional expertise, our dedication to student success, and our responsibility to our mission as a public institution of higher education to transform lives and strengthen communities.
Thank you for all you do for our students, this university, the region, and this state!
