Colleagues,

Over the past week you have likely seen national and international press coverage about A&M-Commerce and the impact of ChatGPT on teaching and learning. This scenario highlights that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is part of our reality as an institution of higher education and will no doubt impact how our faculty teaches and our students learn.

A&M-Commerce now has a unique opportunity to assume a leadership role in the rapidly evolving AI space, as we

  * Embrace this new reality and engage with AI in a way that helps us adjust teaching strategies and increase student learning.
  * Teach our students to use AI technology appropriately, as a learning tool, and maintain high standards of academic honesty and personal integrity.
  * Develop strategies and policies to manage the intersection of higher education and AI effectively; and,
  * Prepare our students for the workforce where the use of AI is standard practice.

With participation from our administration, faculty, and staff, we can take full advantage of this opportunity. Thus, I am delighted to share that Texas A&M-Commerce will be hosting a summit in the upcoming month, bringing experts together to further push the limits of our understanding and use of AI.

In addition, the Division of Academic Affairs is instituting an AI Task Force, co-led by Dr. Salvatore Attardo and Dr. Benton Pierce, charged with the following.

  * Help prepare a university-wide AI policy, including verbiage in course syllabi specifying the allowable uses by students of AI tools such as ChatGPT4.
  * Organize workshops on the possibilities and limitations of the use of AI in higher education; and,
  * Establish a university-wide workgroup to explore the integration of AI in the teaching, research, and administration of the university, with a special emphasis on assisting in our long-standing goal of transforming lives by fostering critical thinking skills in our students so that they are prepared for the workforce.

Please contact Dr. Attardo or Dr. Pierce for more information or if you would like to join in this work.

We have a unique opportunity before us. A&M-Commerce innovatively led the development of online learning and competency-based education, and we can and will serve as a frontrunner in this new era of AI in higher education.

Go Lions!
