Texas A&M University-Kingsville has received a $20 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to establish a 5-year program aimed at helping Hispanic students acquire the skills necessary for agricultural-related careers. This grant, which is the largest in the university's history, is part of President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which allocated $262.5 million to higher education institutions. The program, titled Leading Hispanics to Federal Agency Employment (LEADING), will support students from high school through graduate programs, providing mentorship, professional development, and bilingual skills. The initiative aims to increase retention, graduation rates, and USDA career placements for Hispanic students, while also addressing the needs of the agriculture sector. In addition, the grant will enable the university and its partners to host symposiums and career fairs with USDA agencies to foster interaction between students and the agricultural community. The program's impact is expected to be transformative, benefiting both students and the regional workforce.
Texas gets $60 million in federal funds to strengthen power grid against extreme weather<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__tamu.us14.list-2Dmanage.com_track_click-3Fu-3D581e7276f1d610557ba573283-26id-3D0fdf6f3985-26e-3D58049f770b&d=DwMFaQ&c=oqyuZuih6ykib6aKiBq22_bich4AVfYGoLertJN0bEc&r=m4AM5r-dKg5UcS8L1_Quksra1n3WmHRpAlu8EltImmU&m=2myLa-p1l0PBt4HNct4lUVm8Zzcv5dZ_bzAibt_d1Dy6WaIIvreF04zczfF-B8va&s=xHPcMNggQ9h-AoWrWpoma6ljTjAfCrKoW37r5zHZGE0&e=>
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) is set to receive $60.6 million from the federal government to bolster the state's electricity grid infrastructure. The funding, awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy through the grant program established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to enhance the grid's resilience against extreme weather events. State emergency officials will determine the specific utilization of the funds, which could include initiatives like tree trimming near power lines and improving equipment performance under extreme temperatures. Grid resilience has become a priority following the devastating winter storm in 2021, which resulted in power outages and loss of life. While Texas legislators mandated better preparation for power generators, subsequent storms have highlighted the continued vulnerability of the transmission system.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided funding for a research project led by Texas A&M AgriLife Research to develop a unique tomato trait that combines firmness with flavor. The project, part of a larger USDA investment in innovative plant breeding research, aims to characterize the firmness trait found in the Texas A&M breeding line TAM-Sp18-157. The research team, led by Dr. Carlos Avila, will work to understand the genetics behind the trait and its effects on tomato quality, human health attributes, flavor, aroma, and shelf life. Previous attempts to enhance tomato firmness have often resulted in a decline in other desirable attributes, such as flavor. The project builds on previous success and offers promising prospects for developing flavorful and nutritious tomatoes with an extended shelf life, meeting the demands of both producers and consumers.

Texas A&M University Health Science Center has received a $3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct research on immune-based treatments for early precancerous lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. The study aims to utilize epigenetic drugs to re-express cell surface receptors called major histocompatibility (MHC) factors, which are responsible for immune recognition and can help eliminate precancerous cells. Led by Dr. Roderick Dashwood and Dr. Eduardo Vilar-Sanchez, the project focuses on immunoprevention, aiming to address precancer stages before they progress and become more challenging to treat. The research has the potential to impact cancer prevention and immune recognition in familial polyposis and may have implications for other tissues as well.

The Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program aims to invest $200 million in persistently distressed communities to promote economic growth and job creation. It targets areas with low employment rates for individuals aged 25-54 and seeks to close this gap through substantial investments. The program operates in two phases: Phase 1, where applicants can apply for Strategy Development Grants and seek approval for a Recompete Plan, and Phase 2, where larger implementation awards can be requested. The Economic Development Administration (EDA) will announce Phase 1 winners and release the Phase 2 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) in winter 2023. The program was established through the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, with Congress appropriating $200 million as part of the FY 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill out of a total authorized budget of $1 billion.
