Dear Colleagues:
Several hundred students were present at the location of the shooting in Greenvilie this weekend.
That means several hundred of those we are charged to guide toward their goals are hurting.
We teach by how we act, as well as by covering what's in our syllabi.
Please, take the following steps to assist those in your courses who were affected by this tragedy.
1.) Although classes will continue as scheduled, an absence this week will be treated as a University excused absence.
2.) Work with each student as an individual as they try to balance school with life. Be sensitive and flexible in response to the differences in how individuals grieve and cope.
3.) Reach out to those who miss class across the remainder of this week. Ascertain how you can help them, and remind them of the University's commitment to their learning.
4.) Refer longer term absence issues to Dr. Thomas Newsom, Students, for further assistance.
5.) Please remind students that counseling services are available for them. The Counseling Center number is 903-886-5145, or students can walk-in at the center's office in Halliday Student Services Building.
I am confident that our faculty will embrace these students with a caring response in the best traditions of our University.
