LEO SCHOLAR INTERNS FOR CAMPUS DEPARTMENTS/UNITS
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 28, 2017
Hello everyone. Although we've received some strong applications for the Leo Scholar Internship program, we still have more students to place than we have positions. Thus, we've extended the application deadline until this Friday (4/28). I hope you can help us and in turn, we'll help you by sending a wonderful student your way.
The University established the Leo Scholars Program in 2014 to attract highly qualified entering freshmen. The program provides a 50% scholarship against total published cost of attendance (tuition/fees, room and board). Until recently ten Leo Scholars were named annually as a part of the Honors College selection process. We are now in the process of graduating the last cohort of Leo Scholars.
The Leo Scholars Program centers upon giving students practical work experience, most notably solution-visioning and project management opportunities. To that end, the goal is to provide the Leos with an on-campus paid internship. That internship is done during their junior (or third) year.
Departments/units are invited to apply to receive an intern to work with them during the Fall 2017 semester.
Note that we said the department/unit is applying for the intern. Not the other way around.
The internship will be 'problem-based.' That is, campus departments design the internship so that the student is working on an issue that the department would like to see improved - whether it is revamping a system or merely increasing the efficiency of an existing process. To that end, campus departments/units will compete for the services of the Leo Scholars by submitting a proposal where they explain the project that will be assigned to the student. The utility of project, for both the department and the student, will determine placement of the Leo Scholars.
Departments/units get a sharp student to work on a challenging problem without hitting their own budgets. The student gets a paid internship experience and the marketable skills, personal growth, and increased confidence that comes with it.
Use the attached format to prepare a proposal. This proposal format also shows you how proposals will be evaluated to strengthen the quality of ideas and applications.
Thanks for your participation.
