You are invited to attend a program with Special Guest, Dr. Frederick Luis Aldama, on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 3:00pm in Legacy A&B in the Rayburn Student Center.
Synopsis:
Muy Pop!: Meditations on Film, Television, Comics and Latino/ a Popular Culture in the 21st Century
Aldama will unzip his brain, offering a multimedia extravaganza of all things Latino in the 21st Century. This includes a discussion and analysis of film, television, music, animated cartoons, comic books, video games, Latina Barbie, among many others-that mark the abundant presence of Latinos in the nation. Aldama brings to light the education of the sensory and perceptual system of all denizens of the U.S. by Latinos: from the sounds of Ozomatli and Nortec to the teaching of kids their numbers, shapes, and letters in Spanish and English; from playing outer-galactic saviors of migrating alien populations to living vicariously through urban, suburban, and rural Latino subjects; from saving the world in comic books to sleuthing and shooting in the boots of playable Latino protagonists in video games. Aldama offers a new, vital understanding of how Latino are actively shaping--and consuming--today's Latino-transformed mainstream.
Dr. Aldama is the foremost scholar on Latino Americans in Popular Culture and is the author and editor of twenty-one books . He is the founder and director of the mentoring program for Latino(a) students at OSU called LASER (Latino/Latin American Space for Enrichment and Research). Dr. Aldama's programs will explore themes related to education, storytelling, and Latino American Culture. This program will explore humanities question themes of education, impact, and culture. It relates to overall program goals by encouraging discussion about Latino American culture.
