Dear Faculty of Texas A&M-Commerce:
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your
colleague and new Director of the Writing Center. Although some of you
may have encouraged your students to visit us, others may not be
acquainted with the services we are now providing.
To begin, we are devoted to developing the kinds of reading, writing,
and critical thinking skills that the university requires. We welcome
students who need help understanding the particular conventions of
writing, not only for English assignments, but for assignments across
the disciplines. This may entail helping them to break down a
prompt/assignment, guiding them in research practices, focusing and
developing their ideas, and editing for better and clearer style. But
because we value developing students who are independent learners, we
are not an editing service. That is, our highly trained tutors will
explain issues of grammar and style, but we put away the red pens and
hold students accountable for developing themselves as stronger editors
and proofreaders of their own texts.
I'd also like to emphasize the high quality of our tutorial staff and
the ongoing training we provide for them. Part of the training process
involves reading and discussing articles about the theoretical and
practical issues of tutoring. For example, this semester we will have
tutor workshops on better serving our international student population,
which, I know, is an area of concern to many of you. The tutors will
also master APA, MLA, and Chicago formats, so that they can address
students' needs in formatting papers for various disciplines.
Ultimately, the tutors are trained to put the responsibility for writing
and thinking in the hands of the student. I would be happy to address
any particular questions you have about our tutors and respond to your
requests for handouts or workshops that would serve the needs of your
students.
Finally, I would like to invite you to the Center for a short tour or
take advantage of the following services:
* a tutor or I will come to your class to give a 10 minute
explanation of what we do.
* tutors will visit your class and do a "mock" tutoring session.
* a tutor will come to your class and do a short tutoring session
with a volunteer from your class to show students what a session is
like.
* my tutors will be giving various workshops for students
throughout the semester that your students are welcome to sign up for.
If you have any questions about how we might help you and your students
or about why we do things the way we do them, please feel free to call
or email me.
Best Wishes!
