The July 7, 2010 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education features an
article <http://chronicle.com/article/Becoming-a-Successful/66133/> by
David Stone, director of the Office of Sponsored Projects at Northern
Illinois University, on how to become a successful principal
investigator. As Stone describes, it is not enough to have a great idea;
a researcher must also be well positioned, both as a scholar and as a
researcher (these are two different roles in his view), to get the
attention of reviewers. The process should be started long before a
grant proposal is written, through efforts to raise the investigator's
profile in the eyes of potential reviewers, by being an active part of
the ongoing conversation in the discipline, and by developing a solid
understanding of the rules of the game. (Grants Resource Center)
