GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

October 13, 2009

The Graduate Council met Tuesday, October 13, 2009, in the Rayburn
Student Center Pride Conference Room (#231) at 3:00 p.m. with Dean Allan
Headley presiding. Present were: Dr. Ken Alford, Dr. Ben Cranor, Dr.
Donna Dunbar-Odom, Dr. John Hanners, Dr. John Humphreys, Dr. Jeff
Kopachena, Dr. Sharon Kowalsky, Dr. Joyce Miller, Dr. Linda Openshaw,
Dr. Jon Travis, and Dr. Janet Walker. Dr. Ben Jang and Dr. Steven
Shwiff were absent. Dr. Mary Beth Sampson, Vice Chair, was also in
attendance.

Action Items

The minutes from the last Graduate Council, September 8,
2009, were approved.

Committee Reports

Committee on Administration

Dr. Travis presented a committee report on workload for faculty chairing
doctoral dissertation committees. Dr. Alford made the motion to accept
the committee report with a second from Dr. Hanners. The Council
unanimously approved the recommendation with a few changes for
clarification. The final report that was approved read as follows:

Given the amount of time that chairs of dissertation committees are
required to devote to the process for each advisee, and given the amount
of income that the university generates with the 718 course sections,
credit for course workload should be given to dissertation advisers at
the time students are actively completing their dissertations, for a
total of two semesters. Therefore, the Graduate Council proposes that
dissertation advisers be granted the equivalent of one 3-hour course for
every three students registered in their 718 sections, once the students
have completed their proposal defenses. For faculty with fewer than
three students actively working on dissertations, the existing policy of
one course of reassigned time for every three doctoral graduates will
remain in effect, and the reassigned time must be used within one
academic year.

Discussion Items

Dr. Sampson led a discussion on enrollment and recruitment. She
presented information on Fall 2009 enrollment (unofficial), data from
Institutional Effectiveness comparing 2007, 2008 and 2009 showing the
number of students and number of credit hours by classification and
department, and information from Randy McBroom on enrollment trends and
student profiles.

Council members were asked to share recruitment ideas that are working
for their department and where do we go from here.

Need to discuss graduate programs with seniors in our
classes

We (the university) are still small enough that students know the
faculty. As we move away from this, are we losing what attracts
students to our university?

Need more on-line courses and we need to get the word out that we offer
on-line courses/degrees.

Do we have faculty to teach more students?

Need faculty lines

Need to reach and maintain 10,000 (combined undergraduate and graduate)
